Spezia Calcio Stadium

The Alberto Picco Stadium is home for Spezia Calcio and, since 1919, has been hosting the team’s matches. Initially, the stadium had two bleachers: one was equipped with a concrete cover, built during the 30’s, whereas the other was a simple uncovered terracing, placed right in front of the other. The field was enclosed by a running track and, behind the goal posts, there was just a curved fence.

The stadium is dedicated to Alberto Picco, Italian alpine trooper who died courageously during World War I, who had been the first goalscorer ever of the Spezia Calcio. The stadium was built at the end of World War I over an area given by the Italian Navy. The facility was built quickly so that the local team could have a proper field to play its first official championship on – the regional Promotion championship of 1919-1920.

After several modernization and restructuring works, since 2012, the project to improve this stadium has continued, aiming at creating a cutting-edge and barrier-free facility.
The idea is to have a modern stadium, with no pits – that in the past were used to separate the play field from other sections of the stadium – nets, or partition walls, and with all seats covered, and equipped with a skybox and commercial spaces.
In order to foster active integration and participation, the local supporters have been involved in the decision-making and changing process.
The most relevant results over the past few years have included the demolishing of the “Admiral’s Building”, the creation of graffiti of the main façade, the construction of a covered space for people with disabilities, the removal of the mesh fence in the eastern curve of the stadium, and the demolishing of unpleasant barriers between sections.
