Parco della Rimembranza

In the northern part of the city, there is Parco della Rimembranza (literally, Memory Park), a one-hectare green area and one of the main memorial places of La Spezia.

This park, commissioned directly by the Ministry of Education back in 1922, was opened in 1923 and served the purposed to be an urban area to cherish the historical memory.
Currently, requalification works for various areas of the city are in progress, aiming at enhancing other historical places of La Spezia and at shedding new light on the history of the city.

Thanks to the recent restoration operations, a new children’s playground was created: slides, swings, wooden castles, replacing those that were already there with more modern and safer equipment. It is a crucial green area for the city, welcoming citizens and visitors in complete safety, with new public lighting and security cameras.
The Parco della Rimembranza is now one of the heritage sites within the project sponsored by FAI (Italian Environment Fund).

Interesting facts

Each tree planted here symbolizes one of the 535 locals who died fighting during World War I, from 1915 to 1918: the varieties of trees are very diverse here, ranging from cypresses on the peak, to oak trees, pines, lime trees, and laurel trees on the ridges.
In front of every tree, there was a spear holding a plaque indicating the name of soldier the tree had been plated for. During World War II, these plaques were replaced with new plaques that remained up to the 60’s-70’s when a flagpole with the Italian flag was installed.
