Galleria ex Rifugio A.A. "Quintino Sella"

The project “La Spezia Forte” also intends to give new value to the “Quintino Sella” Tunnel, a former anti-aircraft shelter and a masterpiece of engineering, that has been historically relevant for the city of La Spezia.

Tunnels, protecting civilians in cases of bombing raids, were built during World War II, when La Spezia was one of the main targets of the Allies’ offensive. Due to the strategic importance of military and industrial installations, more than 150 tunnels were built throughout the Gulf, and some of them were also kept active during the following Cold War. 

Today, thanks to a set of systematic interventions including conservation of the area, restoration of the original distribution system, and functional enhancement with the addition of facilities and equipment to use this space multifunctionally for exhibitions and museums, the aim is to recover and enhance this precious historical testimony and to integrate it with the city.
