Montemarcello - Magra Park

At the border between Liguria and Tuscany, the Montemarcello-Magra Park includes an area rich in natural, historical, and cultural value, crossing the territories of 20 towns and villages: Ameglia, Arcola, Beverino, Bolano, Borghetto Vara, Brugnato, Calice al Cornoviglio, Carro, Carrodano, Castelnuovo Magra, Follo, Lerici, Ortonovo, Pignone, Riccò del Golfo, Rocchetta Vara, Santo Stefano Magra, Sarzana, Sesta Godano and Vezzano Ligure.

The Montemarcello-Magra Park has ancient origins and stretches from the Caprione promontory, full of fishing villages and sandy beaches, to the river Magra valley, with its wetlands rich in biodiversity, up to the hinterland, with the green hills of the river Vara valley

Besides its river area of great natural, historical, and cultural value, the Caprione promontory is an ideal departure point for many excursions. The presence of these diverse environments offers the optimal living conditions to many animals and plants.

This area, where the Romans created the settlement of Luni which can still be seen today, features crops and wetlands inhabited by many waterfowl species.

This Park is a successful example of requalification of degraded areas. The most pristine river stretch is that of the Vara river, tributary of the Magra river. The valley is dotted with historical centers, castles, and ancient water mills.

The Montemarcello-Magra Park is not just a group of unique landscapes, but it is also a workshop of certified preservation and requalification projects coordinated by the Minor Wildlife Regional Center and Montemarcello Botanical Garden.
