Campiglia e Tramonti
Campiglia is one of the most iconic and well-known areas of the Gulf of La Spezia and is divided into four main sites: Persico, Schiara, Monasteroli, and Fossola. Campiglia is positioned on the western hills and is the highest village in the entire Municipality of La Spezia. Its ancient core is placed between the Mount of Castellana and the Mount of Coregna, where the tradition says some people found shelter while fleeing from the pirates.
During the clearest days, its evocative landscape opens up and gives the possibly to spot the Tuscan islands of Capraia, Gorgona and even the Elba Island. At the same time, looking towards the eastern part of the Gulf, this position offers panoramic views on the Apuan Alps as well.
A typical feature of this area is terracing, obtained thanks to dry-stone walls, projecting towards the sea.

Campiglia, La SpeziaInteresting facts
The geographical name of Campiglia is owed to Ottone II that in a document dated 991 referred to this area of Tramonti as “Campiglia” for the first time. However, the evidence of the village and of the Chiesa di Santa Caterina di Alessandria (Saint Catherine of Alexandria’s Church) only dates back to 1326. The village also had a castle, of which today there is no trace.
