Portovenere - Muzzerone Fort circular route

This circular route starts in Piazza Bastreri, at Portovenere. You will climb up the stairway skirting the Castle (AVG/AV5T trail - Alta Via del Golfo/Alta Via delle 5 Terre, or High Route of the Gulf/High Route of the 5 Terre) and get past the quarry. Once you reach the fork with route 516, continue on route 516 taking you to Forte del Muzzerone (Muzzerone Fort). You will walk downhill on a paved road and take the first trail on the right, route 518, rapidly descending towards the Chiesetta di Sant’Antonio (Sant’Anthony Church), crossing the AVG and route 517.

Be careful because also route 516, a few meters after the fork with route 518, begins descending towards Le Grazie. From the concrete water depot (139 m above sea level), you will walk on a paved road leading to the road to Portovenere at a place named Cavo. From here, you can follow the road to Portovenere or you can take the stairway on the left, close to the Carabinieri police station, taking you to sea level at the area named Olivo. From here, you will walk along the promenade to Piazza Bastreri.
