Via Francigena from Sarzana to Tuscany

The Via Francigena is one of the ancient roads connecting France to the south of Europe, which, passing through Rome, reaches Apulia. Here, pilgrims and crusaders would then embark for the Holy Land. 
The Via Francigena is a route rich in traditions and memories, connecting Liguria to Tuscany.In the past, many people would set off on this journey, leaving behind their families and belongings, prepare their will and go, a sign of devotion and penitence, creating a walking community for the centuries to come. Today, this centuries-old tradition has been rediscovered, transforming all of the Italian itineraries into popular destinations.

The Via Francigena here connects Sarzana to Massa and it is a route through vineyards and hills, where mountains and sea take turns in the background, giving visitors the possibility to discover the local treasures, ranging from the Medici family’s fortresses to the archeological site of Luni. The part of the Via Francigena within the territory of La Spezia has a lot to offer in terms of landscape, culture and food and wine.

In the Middle Ages, pilgrimages towards Rome, Jerusalem or Santiago de Compostela were considered a proper life goal. The first person to walk the current Via Francigena was Sigeric, Archibishop of Canterbury, who during his return journey kept track of the different stages he had gone through every day, reaching the number of 79 of them.
