Church of San Michele Arcangelo

In La Spezia, among the houses of the district of Pegazzano, the ancient bell tower of the Church of San Michele Arcangelo stands out, with its unique pink façade.
In the ogival lunette of the entrance door there are still traces of a fresco depicting Saint Michael. The parish archive, among many dates, works on the church, projects, and purchases, indicates the journey taken by Giovanni Battista Calcagno, parish priest from 1915 to 1946 who worked hard to make this place shine again.
The church is exquisitely decorated also on the inside: in 1929, the latest pictorial decoration was made, situated above the altar in the apse, and depicting Saint Michael the Archangel in the act of defeating the devil. On the walls of the presbytery, you will see the four evangelists, Saint Peter, and Saint Paul. In this area, you will also find the inscription bearing the song of the angels “Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth”.
The single nave has two side altars dating back to the 17th century and featuring some single-lancet windows from the 14th century, testifying the historical past of the city.
The counter-façade bears the memory of a bell gable with a cross-shaped opening absorbed by the rest of the building during the 17th-century enlargement works.
The building is evidence of the architectural and artistic shapes of great importance and dating back to different periods.
