Diocesano museum

This is the third exposition center in the entire province. The need for a triple site for the Diocesan Museum arose from the complex situation of the diocese, which was first created in Luni and then transferred to Sarzana, losing a portion of its territory with the creation in 1133 of the diocese of Brugnato by the newborn archdiocese of Genoa and the transfer of the bishop’s see to La Spezia in 1929.

The permanent collections of artifacts connected with the diocese offer a complete picture of the religious situation of the territory, without impoverishing the art treasury of the parish or associations.

The exhibition is on two floors, and some of the most important works are: the large 1539 canvas showing the Triple Coronation of St. Nicholas of Tolentino, originally painted for the lost church of the Augustinians by the La Spezia artist Antonio da Carpena.

We invite you to visit the precious small St. Jerome, also by Carpena known as Carpenino, who here mimics the Flemish style, the Gothic sculptures showing the Virgin with Child from the parish churches of Santo Stefano in Marinasco and Sant’Andrea in Fabiano, the 15th-century carved and engraved slates and the numerous liturgical items.
