Monte Viseggi Astronomical Observatory

The "Luciano Zannoni" Astronomical Observatory is an Italian astronomical observatory located on the eponymous mountain overlooking La Spezia, at coordinates 44°07′57″N 9°47′24″E at 347 meters above sea level. Its MPC code is 126 Monte Viseggi.

The observatory was designed, financed, and built by the Association of Amateur Astronomers of La Spezia, utilizing the disused structures of some anti-aircraft positions, built around 1935 by the Royal Navy. Construction began in 1982 and was completed on April 14, 1989, when it was inaugurated by Margherita Hack. In 1996, improvements were made to the observatory's optics for the development of digital photography and to enable the study of asteroids, resulting in the discovery and naming of six objects in the main belt, one of which, Palmaria, earned Luigi Sannino the Guinness World Record as the youngest asteroid discoverer in the world at the age of 18, a record still unbeaten to this day.

Abandoned for years, after the concession obtained by the Amateur Astronomers of La Spezia in 2022, the association has renewed and reclaimed the entire park, the internal rooms of the observatory, and acquired new optical and scientific equipment. The structure was inaugurated in version 2.0 on March 2, 2024, with the new name: Luciano Zanno Astronomical Observatory, scientific park of Monte Viseggi.
